Categories

Volunteer/s the Year: The John Franks Memorial Award

Awarded to the volunteer or group who have made an outstanding overall contribution to the life of students at the University of Hull. For example, this could be a volunteer committee member for one of our activity groups, a whole activity group or a student led volunteer project. The John Franks’ Award is dedicated to the memory of John Franks, Head of the University Careers service for over 30 years. He was a great supporter of Hull Students’ Union and was responsible for personally helping thousands of Hull students and graduates with their careers.

The panel will look for:

  • Their impact of a project, campaign or event on students or the local community
  • The positive feedback received from students and or the local community of the individual or groups impact
  • Their commitment to training and development to support their role within Hull Students’ Union
  • The group or individual’s commitment to Hull University Union values, policies and the code of conduct

  • Reaching beyond the ‘usual suspects’ to engage a wider group of diverse students

The Sustainable Impact Award

This award recognises an individual volunteer or group’s dedication to creating positive environmental changes to support Hull University Union declaration of a climate emergency.

The panel will look for:

  • Their online digital presence in an effort to reduce paper use
  • Their involvement in campaigning to raise awareness on environmental issues
  • Fundraising activity specific to an environmental cause
  • Their commitment to Hull University Union values, policies and code of conduct

The Education Impact Award

The Julie Watson Memorial Award

Awarded to the volunteer or group who has made the biggest positive impact on the development of other students through Hull University Union activity. This award is dedicated to the memory of Julie Watson, former Director of Membership Services and HR. In almost ten years of service with Hull University Union, she made an enormous contribution to the development of the organisation and the staff who work here. “Julie loved to develop our staff and see them improve. Many of our staff are doing jobs they would never have believed themselves capable of without Julie’s constant encouragement. As a result everyone thought the world of her and this was repaid through the commitment she inspired in providing excellent service to our student members over a wide range of activities.”

The panel will look for:

  • Demonstration of diverse and inclusive engagement, events and activities
  • Demonstration of lasting positive effects and potential for improvement in their area of interest
  • Their commitment to the Hull University Union values, policies and student code of conduct
  • Their passion for their activity or campaign

The Partnership Award

This award recognises an external stakeholder or local community organisation that has collaborated with Hull University Union in supporting and developing the student experience.

  • Evidence of the benefit of collaboration had on reaching a shared goal
  • Their support of Hull University Union values, policies and student code of conduct

The Derek Forster Student Volunteering Award

Awarded to the HUSSO student union volunteer or group who has made an exceptional contribution to students and the local community throughout the year. The winner will receive the annual Derek Forster Bursary prize of £575 to further their career working in the area of social change and community development.

  • High student involvement in their campaigns/projects/events
  • Taken appropriate steps to ensure their events and activities are suitable and accessible for all
