Evie launches Disability History Month 2020
Access: How far have we come? How far have we yet to go?

We are incredibly excited to celebrate Disability History Month for the first time this year as a Students’ Union. This spans from 18th November - 18th December in the UK. The theme this year is ‘Access: How far have we come? How far have we yet to go?’.

Disabled students’ Representative, Sarah-Marie Da Silva explains why Disability History Month is important to celebrate the lives of disabled people past and present.

We will have a variety of content produced throughout the month to celebrate Disability History Month.

The current restrictions have meant that the University and Students’ Union have had to change and postpone some of the planned events, such as Give it A Go disabled sports sessions. But we are determined to host these events in 2021 when it is safe to do so.

Hull University Students’ Union will be releasing blogs written by students and the Student President Tea about historical disabled figures, and personal experiences.  We will also be signposting to external sources where you can find out more about Disability History Month and disabled figures in history. There will also be videos produced by a student about British Sign Language.

Hull Sport is directing people to webinars run by Boccia England, where people have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of this inclusive sport. This includes a free webinar on Wednesday 25th November at 7pm on Learning from match analysis from officials. There is also free webinar on Wednesday 2nd December at 7pm on effective questioning for coaches. There is also a free webinar on athlete experience on Wednesday 9th December at 7pm. You can find out more about these events, and how to get involved by heading to our website, hulluniunion.com/events.

Hull Sport will also be sharing testimonials from students about how being involved in disabled sports has impacted their lives.
