Isobel Hall, President of the Students’ Union
So many of you may remember that the University made the decision to invest in the Students’ Union building in order to improve the student experience at the University of Hull. They recognised the key and essential role that the Students’ Union play in delivering services and activities for students and building that University community. From being a place to buy essential items, meet up for lunch or drinks with friends, to being home to the popular Wednesday Asylum night and facilitating important democratic meetings and discussion fora.
We are really proud of our strong working relationship with the University which allows us to make positive changes for so many students and therefore are really pleased that they have recognised and chosen to invest in the Students’ Union.
Although the full-scale building works from last year were put on hold, we are delighted to have secured £250,000 to make immediate improvements to our building to directly impact students. This is a massive win for everyone involved and ultimately for our student members who are really going to see the benefit.
Naturally, during this time, we have been working online and facilitating our services virtually in order to continue to support students, however, we felt it was important to put this message out to our members as something positive to look forward to when campus reopens again in the future. We are more than just a building, but recognise that for many, the Students’ Union is very much at the heart of campus life which is really important.
What are we investing the money in?
Every penny of the money the University is investing in your Students’ Union is going directly into improving our student spaces on offer.
The first floor is often a busy hive of activity for many student groups and individuals wanting space to study and meet with friends. Therefore, we are renovating the first floor Haven area to better suit the needs of our students. We are introducing brand new bookable spaces for groups of students to book out for when they need extra space to meet and get together. This will be bookable to anyone, not just established groups.
Secondly, the Haven is getting a face-lift! With a brand new lick of paint and the introduction of some new and modern furniture, this space will look and feel like an enjoyable student space to spend time in. The furniture will range from high tables to eat lunch at, to private booths for study time.
Johnny Mac Space:
Johnny Mac has been a relatively quiet space recently as it really hasn’t been fit for purpose for students. This is all going to change as we move our fabulous student media into the space where HUU Homes used to be, putting our students really front and centre, and turning the rest of Johnny Mac into bookable space for student groups. This will be multi-functional as it will double up as a place to meet friends with new furniture into a performance space for those who need it.
New catering outlet:
Finally, we will be introducing a new catering outlet into where the old hairdressers used to be as we expand our range to better meet the needs and demands of our students.
Health and Safety:
The Sanctuary Board decking will be replaced with a hard standing floor and additional seating to make the most of those sunny days on campus! Finally, the remaining money will be invested into upgrades to our infrastructure including new CCTV.
All of this will be back in place for when you next return to campus! We are super excited to see these fabulous changes be made and to be able to improve the experience for all our members.
As a Students’ Union, we are constantly working for you to make positive changes to your University experience. If you have any suggestions or concerns, please do get in touch with us!
