"I know there’s been a lot of discussion online about this year’s take on End of Year Ball, The End and I’d like to give you an update ahead of the event next Saturday.
Firstly, to explain a little bit about the event. The decision to no longer run an End of Year Ball ourselves was made following an event review which took into account student feedback and expectations, ticket sales and student numbers.
This review predicted that running a 2019 event in the same format as 2018, was not financially viable. This was taken to our Board of Trustees who made the decision that it was not sustainable to run a loss-making event in the long term. We therefore began to look at other ways to run an event to ensure you still had access to an end of year celebration.
We wanted to ensure that any event responded to your feedback that you wanted; ‘more than just another Asylum night’, priced below £25 with a wide range music styles.
With this in mind, we made the decision to partner with live-music event company VMS as we were confident that their experience could develop a celebration that matched what you told us you wanted. Asylum would be a venue for this celebration but VMS would organise the event, plan the schedule, book artists and sell tickets. We felt that their concept of ‘The End’ responded to your feedback and would deliver an event you would enjoy.
Developing a brand new large scale event takes time and includes everything from logistics to booking artists and agreeing contracts. Because of this we acknowledge that things like the lineup announcements, schedule and transport have taken longer to announce than we would have liked and we know that this has left some of you feeling confused and disappointed.
We've also seen comments on social media regarding the time scales and locations of the event. In response to this feedback we have been able to make some changes to the event. We have therefore taken the decision to move acts, originally planned for Welly and Polar Bear, back to campus. You'll be able to see all the acts in one space so you won't miss anyone and don’t need to worry about without moving from venue to venue.
We’ve even heard that you don’t know what to wear. So we’d like to invite you to dress to impress and go all out to celebrate your achievements this year. We can also confirm that there will be no increase to drinks prices so you can enjoy drinks all night at normal Sanc prices.
The event will take place in Asylum, Sanc and on Sanc decking. It will start from 6pm finish at 3am. For full details click here.
We genuinely think this will be a great event and I hope that I see you there on the 25th."
