Tom, President of Activities
My wins include representing and supporting societies, room bookings, more space and advertising!
1) Representation and support for societies
Societies Council happened once in 2017/18. We now have three per semester with much higher attendance, we’ve introduced voting cards and I’m constantly trying to improve how council is run to make it more useful for Society Presidents. We’ve also passed a motion to restructure the Societies Executive Committee, which means I’ll have a much more direct involvement as Chair. On top of that, we’re planning a revamp of the society presidents handbook - which will be released soon! I always try my best to support wherever I can, for instance the 24hr Charity Takeover saw loads of our societies pull together to raise over £1,500.
2) Your Ideas - what we’ve done!
I’ve been working with the commercial team to make better use of spaces to benefit our societies - I’ve put forward a sponsorship proposal. I’m pretty sure this one will take off - so stay tuned. Speaking of which, I’ve shared JAM radio’s schedule with the commercial team now they are back broadcasting - listen out for them!
3) Room bookings, advertising and timetabling
We secured 63 extra rooms for students to use! However, we faced issues around furniture and preparing the rooms so they were ready to use. I’m working with the University timetabling team who can help us take a proactive approach to room bookings. We’ve also started the conversation with Middleton Hall to offer a venue slot there, fingers crossed! Societies can now advertise on screens in the library and university accommodation, as well as being able to book out stalls in the Courtyard and the Lawns.
