FAQs

Why are we holding a referendum?

The ‘Memorandum and Articles of Association of Hull University Union Ltd’ is the core governing document for the Students’ Union and must be reviewed every five years by the University of Hull. Jane Stafford, incoming CEO of the Union (August 2018), conducted a review of the Memorandum with all Trustees – Sabbatical, Student and External, and the senior management team, working with a specialist solicitor from Rollits, Hull.

It is clear that whilst no significant changes are required to the Memorandum, which would alter the way the Union operates, a number of changes are needed. These changes need to be made to reflect working practice and ensure the Union remains current and prepared for the next three to five years.

The process of making these changes to the Memorandum are as follows:

  • Agreement by the Board of Trustees of Hull University Union followed by
  • Agreement by the University of Hull followed by
  • Referendum of the Members of the Union (all Students who are members)

Does Hull University Union have a position on this referendum?

The Students’ Union is firmly in favour of the changes being proposed by the Board of Trustees in this referendum.  Student members, including elected officers, are free to express their own views, but they do not represent an official Students’ Union view. We will be facilitating a Question and Answer session with the Chief Executive Officer, Jane Stafford, and members of the Board of Trustees so that students can find out more about the changes being proposed and the reasons behind this referendum being brought.
