Introducing ‘The End’

April 8, 2019

Today we have announced that this years’ end of year celebration, ‘The End’ will be brought to you by our live music partners, VMS Live. This new event sees Asylum feature alongside VMS venues Welly and Polar Bear as part of a multi-venue event with over 30 acts across seven stages.

We are pleased to be part of this new event and to be hosting some exciting acts in our venues including the event headliner, Sub Focus. The event will start at 2pm (Asylum from 9pm)and includes live music and performances and the nights out that you love including; The Tower, Jelly, Shuffle, Shinobi, Jamrock, The Sesh and Crystal Clear. Follow the event on facebook for the latest announcements.

The decision to work with VMS Live to provide our End of Year event was made following an event review which took into account student feedback and expectations, ticket sales and student numbers.

This review predicted that running a 2019 End of Year Ball, in the same format as 2018, would not be financially viable without looking into an alternative arrangement. This was taken to our Board of Trustees who made the decision that it was not sustainable to run a loss-making event in the long term.

A decision was then made to look for an alternative arrangement which would deliver a larger scale event than that of 2018 to mark the end of the semester and provide a final event for those that will graduate in 2019. We looked to seek a partner with significant experience, knowledge of the student market and access to relevant big-name artists. VMS Live has a proven track record of running  large-scale events and the relevant experience required to deliver an oustanding event experience.

Tickets for ‘The End’ go on sale on at 10am on Thursday 11th April. To keep up to date follow the event on facebook.

Q. What does this new approach to the end of year celebration mean for student attendees?

A. The event is being coordinated by VMS Live. They book the artists, plan the event schedule, run the ticketing (via and promote the event.

We will continue to manage the event in our venues as we would any other external event e.g. Bongo’s Bingo or a visiting band/artist. Your experience in our venues will be in line with other events you attend. We will also share promotional information via our social media, on our website and in our physical spaces.

Q. How does this approach take into account student feedback?

A. We are constantly reviewing our offer and asking students for their feedback. We receive a number of common areas of feedback relating to End of Year Ball.

  • You want an event that is more than just a night in Asylum

You told us that you want your end of year celebration to feel different and special. For many students, especially those that attend our club nights, this means something different to an event in Asylum. In the past, we have done this by using outdoor stages, marquees and with additional attractions such as a fun fair. These additional venues are no longer viable when costed against predicted ticket sales and based on previous event attendance. We are unable to run the fun fair following the building of a multi-storey car park over its previous location and no suitable alternative location being available.

Partnering with VMS Live venues, Welly and Polar Bear offers the opportunity to make this event bigger than our venues and to include a daytime element to the event.

  • You want and expect great artists but your preferred cost for this event is no more than £25 for a ticket

VMS are a specialist Live Music and Venues Company and therefore have access to the acts that you want to see. They also work with other Students’ Unions who are running end of year celebrations at a similar time. This has helped build an event line-up that’s better than we could book by ourselves whilst keeping to a ticket price in line with student expectations.

  •  You want to hear the music that you love at your celebration

Student music tastes are so broad and varied that it’s always hard to please everyone but with seven stages we believe that this event offers the closest we could get to cater for all tastes and styles. Expect dance, drum & bass, RnB, Hip hop and dancehall to pop, chart and indie all to feature at this years event.

Q. What if I liked the End of Year Ball and I don’t want to attend a multi-venue event?

A. Asylum will be open from 8pm-3am in line with last year’s End of Year Ball. You are under no obligation to attend any other venues, there will be loads to see and experience in Asylum. You can choose how you celebrate and which venues and acts appeal to you.

Q. What is the theme or dress code for the event?

A. There is no theme for this event and you are welcome to dress however you feel comfortable (in line with individual venue dress codes).  Whether you want to go casual during the day and dress to impress for the evening events, it’s up to you!

Q. How will we travel between venues?

A. Shuttle buses will run between venues throughout the day helping you navigate your way between venues and discover everything that each has to offer. Details to be announced closer to the event.
