Tom was elected to lead and represent students on all matters relating to Societies, Student Media and your volunteering groups: RAG (Raising and Giving) and HUSSO (Hull University Social Services Organisation).
Originally from Pontefract, West Yorkshire, I came to Hull in 2015 to study a Master’s Degree in Mechanical and Medical Engineering; a niche course complemented by the University’s ties to local Medical Engineering companies. When I first got here, I honestly had no clue what I wanted to do or which groups I wanted to get involved with. Thankfully, I felt immediately welcome at Hull, quickly and rather spontaneously signing up to climb Mt Kilimanjaro for charity with RAG (Raising and Giving), all the while being a regular at socials with HUSSKI (Hull University Snow Sports); learning to Ski for the first time as a Fresher Rep with the club.
After having such a great time as a fresher, I decided that I wanted to get more involved with RAG so I ran to be the Challenge Coordinator in my second year. This was my first proper taste of working in Hull Univeristy Union, and seeing all the amazing work that our volunteers and staff do. This spurred me on to take the reins and become the Chair of RAG in my third year, supporting and championing students to collectively raise over £70,000 for charity.
Balancing the responsibilities of being the Chair with my degree was tough but despite that I thoroughly enjoyed my time with RAG. In the absence of a President of Activities last year, I really wanted to do more when it came to the union and supporting the rest of the Activities Zone. Thinking back to my first year, I can see how much I’ve gained from the opportunities I’ve embraced through the union. I ran to be the President of Activities so that I could commit my full time to representing students and helping give back to the organisation and community that has given me so much.
